Stratum – The Golden Slipper Hero

Success with high profile colts Choisir and Fastnet Rock gave Paul Perry the confidence and financial means to up the ante in the sale ring and in 2004, the astute trainer bid $320,000 to secure a Redoute's Choice colt from Luskin Star mare Bourgeois at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Bred and offered for sale by Reavill Farm, he was the equal highest priced colt by Redoute's Choice sold at that sale and would go on to race for Perry and partner Terry Wallace and his family under the name of Stratum.

A magnificent individual, Stratum achieved a rare feat in winning Australia's premier juvenile event, the Golden Slipper in his first preparation at his fourth race start.

Fifth on debut in an open juvenile event to subsequent champion filly Fashions Afield, Stratum improved sharply at his next appearance to finish second to boom colt Snitzel in the Group Three STC Skyline Stakes with subsequent Group One winner Paratroopers in third place.

Stratum forced his way into the Golden Slipper with a dazzling win in the Group Two STC Pago Pago Stakes and held his form to back up seven days later in his ultimate ‘grand final'.

Ridden a beautiful race by Lenny Beasley, Stratum did what Choisir and Fastnet Rock could not, he won the Slipper and did so in commanding style defeating Fashions Afield and Mnemosyne by a length.

Stratum raced on as a three year-old, competing in the best of company, most notably finishing third to Takeover Target in the Group One VRC Newmarket Handicap.

Stratum retired as the Champion Two Year Old Colt of his generation, with two wins and seven placings from 13 starts, plus earnings of $2.2 million and now stands at Widden Stud.
