Fastnet Rock The Champion Sprinter

Passed in at the 2003 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Coolmore Stud when he failed to make his reserve of $300,000, hulking Danehill (USA) colt Fastnet Rock was retained to race by a syndicate of Coolmore owners and sent to Paul Perry to train in the afterglow of Choisir's historic achievements at Royal Ascot.

Competing in a vintage season of two year-olds, Fastnet Rock ended his debut campaign surprisingly winless after contesting all the top events and chasing home the likes of Dance Hero, Charge Forward, Alinghi and a horse that would go on to become the finest sprinter in Hong Kong in Absolute Champion (then Genius and Evil).

At three, the onetime ugly duckling emerged as a serious swan thumping his rivals to score dominant wins in the Group Two AJC Up and Coming Stakes and Group Three AJC Roman Consul Stakes.

Sent to Melbourne, Fastnet Rock found no favours in drawing barrier 16 of 16 in the Group One MRC Caulfield Guineas finishing out of a place, but like Choisir before him emerged unscathed and better for the experience.

Fastnet Rock would win his next four races in succession following the path successfully carved out by Choisir in winning the Group Three VRC L'Oreal Plate (now Group One VRC Ascot Vale Stakes), Group Two VRC Lexus Classic (now Group One VRC The Age Classic) and Group One VRC Lightning Stakes off a break.

He then added the Group One MRC Oakleigh Plate to the tally under 57kg and chased home champion filly Alinghi when second in the Group One VRC Newmarket Handicap, closing out his career with a second to star older mare Shamekha in the Group One AJC T.J. Smith Stakes at Randwick.

Fastnet Rock retired with the record of six wins and nine placings from 19 starts with earnings of $1.7 million and stands at Coolmore Stud.
