Dantelah The Star Mare

A regular visitor to the New Zealand Yearling Sales, Paul Perry returned from Auckland in 1996 with a grey filly purchased for $52,000 by a little known sire in Volksraad (GB) from the imported mare Frosting (USA).

Named Dantelah and raced by Perry, Terry Wallace and family in company with Mr and Mrs S Marshall, she would go on to become one of the best sprinting mares in training.

A natural athlete, Dantelah kicked off her career with a winning debut in the Listed AJC Gimcrack Stakes and followed with a close third to the colts in the Group Two STC Silver Slipper Stakes.

Sidelined through the autumn, Dantelah returned to racing in late May and was sent to Brisbane where she won the Listed QTC Sir Douglas Wadley Stakes.

Given a break on her return, Dantelah went straight to Melbourne for the back end of the carnival and blossomed in the warm spring sunshine defeating the colts to win the Group Three VRC Chivas Regal Stakes (now Group One VRC Ascot Vales Stakes) and followed with a facile victory in the Listed VRC Red Roses Stakes for the fillies.

Dantelah raced on consistently and in January of 1999, Perry thought outside of the square and sent the dashing grey across to New Zealand for a tilt at the Group One AuRC Railway Handicap on New Year's Day.

She ran the race of her life going down by a head to classy colt Bawalaksana, who she had to give 4 kg to in weight and returned to Australia from the experience in career best form.

Dantelah scored a dominant win in the Group Two SAJC Swettenham Stud Stakes (now Group One) in Adelaide and then backed up to win the Group One MRC Oakleigh Plate, before finishing second in the Group One VRC Newmarket Handicap.

Later in her career Dantelah competed in both Hong Kong and Dubai and the experience gained from those trips overseas no doubt laid the foundations for future success with Choisir.

Dantelah was retired to stud with eight wins and 14 placings from 33 starts and prizemoney just shy of $1million.
